Many teams have their fullbacks push up during offensive phases of the game to create numerical advantages further up the pitch.

As a result of this offensive approach, these teams might face the challenge of their fullbacks not having enough time to retreat and get behind the ball during defensive transitions.

In such situations, central defenders play a crucial role by maintaining discipline and holding their positions. The most precarious scenario occurs when they get pulled out of position, leaving spaces behind and potentially exposing the defense to dangerous counter-attacks.

Indeed, this defensive vulnerability becomes especially hazardous when facing teams with speedy wingers. Fast wingers can exploit the spaces left behind by the pushed-up fullbacks and central defenders, utilizing their speed to launch swift and dangerous counter-attacks. Defending against such teams requires a well-coordinated and disciplined defensive unit to minimize the risks and effectively counter the threat posed by the opposing fast wingers.

Even when facing a false 9 or any forward who drops deep to create spaces, the primary responsibility of the centerbacks remains to prevent the opposition from exploiting the spaces behind the defensive line. While the false 9 may not always be the focal point of attacks in the box, their movements can drag defenders out of position, opening up gaps for other players to exploit.

Centerbacks must prioritize staying compact, communicating effectively, and being vigilant to track runs and close down spaces quickly. By doing so, they can mitigate the risk of the opposition finding pockets of space behind the defense and maintain defensive stability throughout the match.
